The Shadow


We all have traits, thoughts, habits, or parts of ourselves that we typically try to deny, repress, avoid dealing with, avoid facing, and hide from others. This is sometimes referred to as the 'shadow'. We prefer to not think about these aspects of ourselves, so we let it be, keep it subconscious, maybe even let them grow, and often don't realise that there are ancient processes (suppressed by the powers that were) for confronting and releasing them.


This introspective process of self-analysis offers a pathway to wholeness, self-awareness, and spiritual growth, and is profoundly transformative.


Understanding the Shadow


The shadow is unconscious aspects of the personality that are often deemed unacceptable or undesirable by the conscious mind. These shadow elements include suppressed emotions, unresolved traumas, unacknowledged (or acknowledged) desires, addictions, and social and corporate conditioning. The shadow represents the parts of ourselves that we disown or reject, fearing social stigma, judgment, or inner turmoil.


Some may prefer to explain this as the battle between good and evil which takes place at every level of humanity, from within each of us internally, to within our friendships, families, workplaces, communities, countries, governments, and humanity as a whole. It is not really a 'battle' as we have been taught but is an interplay or balance (yin/yang) of forces necessary for growth.


The Importance of Shadow Work


Engaging in shadow work is essential for personal growth. By giving attention to our shadow parts for self-analysis it is like shining a light on them. We reclaim lost parts of ourselves and break free from the patterns of self-sabotage and unconscious behavior. Ignoring the shadow only amplifies its influence, leading to projection onto others, inner conflicts, and a sense of disconnection from our authentic selves.


The Process of Shadow Work


Shadow work involves a courageous journey into the depths of the mind, confronting inner demons (sometimes literally) and embracing hidden truths. This process is multifaceted and deeply individual, varying from person to person. However, it typically involves the following steps:


  1. Awareness:  The first step in shadow work is becoming aware of the existence of the shadow and its influence on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This often requires honest self-reflection, introspection, and a willingness to explore uncomfortable truths about yourself and writing down aspects of yourself that you don't want others to know about. Write down a list of things that you do or think that you know are not good for you and you wish to change for the better. Things that you feel are holding you back in growing in the health of your body, mind and spirit. Write as much as you can think of about each continue to write whatever comes into your mind about it each day or as often as you like.

  2. Acceptance:  Accepting the shadow involves acknowledging its presence without judgment or shame. This requires cultivating self-compassion and understanding that the shadow is a natural part of the human experience. Realise that everyone has a shadow and yours may not be as terrible as you may think.

  3. Exploration:  Delving into the shadow entails exploring its various aspects through practices such as journaling (writing), meditation, dream analysis, and therapeutic techniques, such as with the assistance of a genuine intuitive energy worker who works only with high frequency source energy. This exploration may uncover buried emotions, childhood or past life wounds, destructive ancestral/generational traits (sometimes known as curses) and limiting beliefs that have shaped one's identity.

  4. Integration:  Integration involves integrating the insights gained from shadow work into daily life. This may entail making conscious choices aligned with one's authentic values and highest good, setting boundaries, and engaging in self-care practices to nurture inner balance and wholeness.


    For instance, you may decide to do any of the following, such as improve your diet, detox, fast, plant medicine, train in holistic mind-body-soul qualified martial arts such as Cobra Martial Arts twice a week, study ancient healing modalities etc. Deciding on this is the first step. Writing out a plan in your journal and sticking to it is the next step. It may take weeks, months, or years before you are successful in sticking to all parts of your plan, just like it takes months to achieve a belt in martial arts and years to achieve black belt. At Cobra Martial Arts, adults set such goals every three months on their grading form as part of the course and our students report often drastic and immediate improvements in their lives.

  1. Self-Awareness:  Shadow work encourages deep self-awareness, allowing individuals to recognise and understand the underlying motivations behind their thoughts, feelings, and actions/behavior.

  2. Emotional Healing:  By confronting suppressed emotions and unresolved traumas, shadow work facilitates emotional healing and inner peace. Your DNA is recoded so that undesirable shadow traits are not passed on to your descendants, thereby, cleaning up your lineage (both ways, forwards and backwards).

  3. Personal Empowerment:  Integrating the shadow empowers individuals to reclaim their personal power and live authentically, free from the constraints of society, conditioning/brainwashing and unconscious patterns.

  4. Enhanced Relationships:  Shadow work improves interpersonal relationships by reducing projection of your shadow (unhealed parts such as anger, jealousy, feeling of not being good enough/inadequacy etc.) onto your partner and family, and fostering empathy, compassion, and understanding towards others.

  5. Soul Evolution:  Engaging in shadow work is a profound spiritual practice that leads to greater spiritual evolution, self-realisation, and connection with the universe. It is a necessary part of the process to mastering the body, mind and soul, i.e. self-mastery.

Shadow work is a transformative journey of self-discovery and self-integration that holds the potential to unlock profound healing and spiritual growth. By courageously exploring the depths of the psyche and embracing all aspects of the self, individuals can transcend limitations, embody wholeness, and embody the fullness of their being. Embracing the shadow is not only an act of courage but also a gateway to self-mastery (enlightenment) and liberation on the path of spiritual awakening.



Cobra Martial Arts kata: "Three Battles" is about the internal battle of Body Mind & Spirit. Acknowledging and accepting this battle can be more frightening and more difficult that sparring or fighting any opponent, as you now face yourself. As a matter-a-fact, most people don't have the courage to accept this battle.
