Who Were the Samurai?
The Samurai were special warriors from Japan hundreds of years ago. They were more than just fighters—they lived by strong values that guided their daily lives. These values can still inspire us today, especially in martial arts and in life and we study and follow many of these at Cobra Martial Arts.
Samurai Values and Life Lessons
1. Respect (Rei) Samurai always showed respect—to their teachers, their families, their leaders, and even their opponents.
➡ Lesson: Always treat others kindly and with good manners.
2. Courage (Yu) Even when afraid, Samurai faced challenges with bravery.
➡ Lesson: Be brave in training, at school, at home, in life and when standing up for what is right.
3. Discipline (Gi) Samurai trained every day and followed rules with focus and commitment.
➡ Lesson: Work hard, be consistent, keep promises, and don’t give up easily.
4. Honor (Meiyo) A Samurai’s word and actions had to match. They were honest and trustworthy. If you 'talk the talk' then you must 'walk the walk'.
➡ Lesson: Do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
5. Self-Control (Jisei) Samurai stayed calm in difficult times and controlled their emotions.
➡ Lesson: Don’t let anger or frustration control you—breathe, think, and stay balanced and centred.
Why This Matters for You
Even though the Samurai lived long ago, their values are just as important today. They are the same lessons we are taught and practice at Cobra Martial Arts:
Show respect to teachers and classmates.
Be brave when trying something new.
Use discipline to improve your skills.
Live with honor by being truthful.
Practice self-control in training and everyday life.
By following the way of the Samurai, you can grow stronger—not just in martial arts, but as a person, and you will be well on your way to Black Belt.
