The Freestyle or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) concept

When we begin to explain our martial arts styles to parents, many advise that they are not so concerned about what 'styles' of martial arts we teach, but are more interested in how we can positively influence their children. They request assistance in areas such as self confidence, discipline, respect for elders, balance, coordination and / or bullying etc.

New students regularly report that they have heard positive reports in community about Cobra and how we instill important values, good character and leadership skills in our students. For many, all they want is that guarantee before beginning.

But for those who do need to know more about the 'styles' taught and how it all started, the following is for you.

Cobra's founders are instructors Craig and Aubrey Monie who began martial arts training as children. They have studied and achieved black belt ranks or higher in many martial arts styles, as well as competing at state level in numerous forms of martial arts over the past 23 years.

In response to the requests of friends and family, instructor Craig established Cobra with the assistance of his brother. Cobra was an instant success in the local community for a number of reasons explained below. The school has grown over the years to an academy of hundreds of students.

What became evident to the founding instructors very early in their training was that each individual form of martial arts had areas of strength and weakness. For instance boxing teaches excellent handwork but neglects grappling (close range holding, trapping and controlling), knees, elbows, kicks, take-downs and wrestling. Taekwondo teaches amazing high kicks but often neglect the more practical kicks to the legs, grappling, tripping, take-downs and wrestling. As a matter-a-fact if you analyse any 'individual' martial art you will find strengths and weaknesses.

Being qualified in a number of different martial arts styles, the instructors combined the five most popular martial arts into the one, complete system. They combined the superior handwork of boxing with the spectacular high kicks of Taekwondo and Karate, the powerful low kicks of Muay Thai Kickboxing, the proven stand-up grappling and take-downs of Muay Thai Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu, the groundwork of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and the weaponery of Philippino Eskrima (also known as Arnis or Kali).

Cobra consequently absorbed the strengths of each art into its curriculum and eliminated the weaknesses of each 'individual' art, creating a complete, all-round martial arts system.

The mixed martial arts or freestyle concept is nothing new. Bruce Lee's martial arts system was a mixed system also and in recent years, particularly after the advent of 'all style' competitions such as UFC, the martial arts industry is wising up to the mixed martial arts concept. At Cobra we have been doing this all along.
