The credit belongs to those people who are actually in the arena...
who know the great enthusiasms,
the great devotions to a worthy cause;
Who at best, know the triumph of high achievement;
and who at worst, fail by daring greatly...
so that their place shall never be with those cold and timid souls,
who know neither victory nor defeat.

Theodore Roosevelt - 26th President of the USA

“I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions” - Dorothy Day

Don’t believe that the lines on your palm predict your future.
Those who don't have hands still have a future.
You determine your own future.

As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.  Ralph Waldo Emerson

The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants.   Gichin Funakoshi

The Benefits of Skipping

The humble skipping rope is easily the cheapest, lightest and most convenient fitness device available to us and skipping is one of the most effective fat-burning exercises. Skipping (also known as ‘jump rope’) can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour. That means that by skipping for only 20 minutes, you can burn up to 330 calories which is about the same number of calories as contained in a Double Cheeseburger!

Skipping is not only a fast fat burner, but it is great for agility, footwork, shoulder endurance (so we can hold our guard up stronger and longer), posture, balance, reflexes and coordination. These are things vital to be a great martial artist! It is also an all-over body workout for strengthening and toning, with strong focus on calves, deltoids, arms and the abdominal area. It is no wonder that martial artists and boxers include skipping in their training programs!

So while skipping can be frustrating in the beginning, once you get the hang of it, you’ll quickly start reaping the benefits. The best way to get rid of the frustration of missing beats and preventing boredom is to make sure you mix up the routine. Different jumps can include a single bounce, a double bounce, a jog step, knees up, cross-overs, sprints and the Boxer’s shuffle. By changing the jump every 30 seconds or so, you’ll be more likely to stay in a rhythm by avoiding muscle fatigue in a certain area.

Mushin Fight Gear stock skipping ropes of a variety of lengths and weights, starting from only $12.95 each. Ropes include basic PVC, ball bearing swivel and the heavier Muay Thai thick Kickboxing skipping rope for maximal development. Check them out now!

Motivation - The Hills & Valleys of Martial Arts training

When you are successfully graded to a new belt level, it is likely that you experience a ‘high’ point in your training. Another way to see this is as a ’hill’ of motivation. It is during these high points where it is easy for us to attend training, and put 100% into everything we do. However there can never be peaks without low points. These low points, or ’valleys,’ in our journey to Black Belt are times when we are lacking in motivation to train, and may even start missing classes. It is in these valleys where we must draw upon all our determination, discipline, and perseverance, to stick it out until we reach the next hill. It is important to understand that these ‘valleys’ are temporary lulls in training, and that another ‘hill’ in your motivation to train is just around the corner. In time you will learn to understand and accept these ‘hills and valleys’. You will develop great discipline and determination, and the time spent in ‘valleys’ will be brief, while the ‘hills’ in your training will lengthen. Remember that anyone who ever reached their Black Belt negotiated both the ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ of training. If training were always easy, then Black Belt would be no achievement at all.

The Death Touch - Real or myth?

Is the Death Touch real or a myth?

The Death Touch or Dim Mak can be traced back thousands of years to Traditional Chinese Medicine / Acupuncture. It is said that Dim Mak techniques are attacks to pressure points and vital points, which can cause illness and / or delayed or immediate death.

So is Dim Mak real? The Dim Mak (not Big Mac which some say can also cause illness and death) has been shrouded in secrecy, however more recently medical research and neuroscience has provided evidence that the Dim Mak does effect the nervous and cardiovascular systems and is in fact real and lethal.

It has also been found that Dim Mak techniques have been hidden by martial arts masters of the past, often in traditional kata.

There is speculation that the true cause of death of the legendary Bruce Lee (the famous movie star and founder of the freestyle martial art Jeet Kune Do) in 1973 was actually caused by a delayed reaction to a Dim Mak strike he received several weeks prior to his collapse.

Just as martial arts and pressure point attacks can cause serious injury, a true master also knows how to heal and reverse the effects of a pressure point attack.
